What’s the best local dish you’ve ever eaten while traveling?
The Summer of ’86. My high school bestie and I were ‘budget holidaying’ in the South of France. We were young, beach-loving girls, carefree and living happily enough, on baguettes and refills of cheap white wine
Then we met ‘The Band’, a group of Nottingham Uni graduates performing across the Riviera that summer. They had swag, merch and, having worked for months, far more money than we did. And they took us out for a meal…
Well it was glorious, the finest of local seafood platters, like a banquet to our (slightly) malnourished systems, and the star of the table…the prawns. Fresh, still shelled, and seasoned with Gallic ‘je ne sais quoi’, their flavours danced on the tongue and seemed the most delicious thing I had ever eaten.
Back on our spending limit the next day, but I didn’t care. The taste of those prawns lasted the rest of the holiday…in fact I think I can still taste them today!
It is common knowledge (if you are French, like me) that French food is the best. Except for the escargots. Nobody is that hungry! Growing up French in London, I often worried about bringing my friends home for dinner as my mother would cook delicious but “exotic” foods which didn’t always go down well! And then training my own kids to eat French was a a challenge!
